Vinyl Plank (LVP) vs Hardwood: Installation Cost Compared (2026)

Vinyl plank averages $8.50 a square foot installed and solid hardwood $11.00, inside bands of $4.75 to $13.25 and $7.50 to $14.50 as of August 2026.

Put both into the same 340 sq ft living room at mid grade and the rates land at $10.22 and $11.60, a difference of $1.38 a foot our arithmetic. Both figures cover boards, crew time and the layer directly beneath them; tear-out, stairs and subfloor work sit outside them on either page. Money is the smaller half of this decision. Sanding, slab moisture and who swings the tool are the larger half.

At mid grade, in the 340 sq ft living room both calculators open with, the two floors finish $471 apart: $3,474 in plank against $3,945 in solid white oak our arithmetic. Across all grades the national averages sit further apart than that, $8.50 a square foot against $11.00, because each page prices its own ladder of products.

The two bills are built back to front

Boards take $3.95 of an average installed plank foot and $8.45 of a wood one; crew time takes $3.84 and $2.25; the layer underneath is $0.72 of underlayment and transitions against $0.29 of cleats and rosin paper. On a plank quote the line to question is labor; on a wood quote it is the board, and the species and width you pick move it further than any negotiation.

Your state rewrites only the crew line, which is why it reaches deeper into a plank bill. Both floors belong to one trade, occupation code 47-2042 in the May 2025 wage release BLS OEWS May 2025, so one factor moves both totals. Across the 44 states with a published wage, the plank average runs $7.25 to $11.00 and the oak average $10.25 to $12.50.

One switch has no opposite number

The wood page carries six job switches and the plank page five, and the spare one is sanding and finishing in place at $3.00 to $8.00 per square foot. Nothing on the plank side answers it, because vinyl is never sanded once laid TodaysHomeowner-VinylPlank. Tear-out differs too: an old wood floor runs $1.38 to $3.88 per square foot against $1.00 to $3.50 for old vinyl or tile. Carpet removal, furniture and subfloor preparation are close enough to identical.

Stairs are not. Plank is billed at $40 to $120 a step against $100 to $250 in oak, which over the thirteen-step flight both calculators price is $520 to $1,560 against $1,300 to $3,250. The switch table sets every band side by side.

Section 03

Which one takes wear better?

Neither, on the evidence published: hardwood prints a dent number and plank prints an abrasion number, and the two do not convert into each other.

Harder is not steadier, and mils are not hardness

The two oaks we price make the point. White oak is the harder board, 1,350 lbf against red oak's 1,220, and the restless one: it shrinks 5.6 percent radially and 10.5 percent tangentially, where red oak stops at 4 and 8.6 WoodDB-WhiteOak, WoodDB-RedOak. The full species ladder is on the hardwood page.

On the plank side, the figure to get in writing is mils rather than total thickness. A mil rating says nothing about a dropped pan, so do not set 22 mil against 1,350 lbf and call it a result.

Read the wear clause, not only the wear layer

One plank warranty counts wear only when the vinyl has gone through to the core across at least 3 percent of the floor, and says plainly that scratches and lost gloss do not qualify COREtec-Plus-Warranty. The wood equivalent in small print is the sanding count, which one maker holds to between one and three, set by the collection Bruce-Warranty-official. The arithmetic of how much timber a sander can take is worked out on hardwood vs engineered hardwood.

Section 04

What has to happen under each floor?

Neither floor is barred from a basement outright; what differs is the construction that has to go in first. Rigid-core plank is laid on, above or below grade once the slab passes its readings, but not over concrete with a history of high moisture or hydrostatic conditions COREtec-GA-Originals, Shaw-GA-FloortePro35. Solid hardwood cannot be nailed into concrete, so a sleeper or plywood deck goes over the slab first and the finished floor ends up 3/4 to 1-1/2 in higher HWInfo-Concrete, Easiklip-ConcreteInstall.

Vapor retarderConditional: on an uncured slab one maker says 6 mil poly should be considered Shaw-GA-FloortePro354 to 6 mil poly, lapped 4 to 6 in HWInfo-Concrete

Two thresholds, two different logics

These are two different measurements. The plank figure reads the concrete. The wood figure compares two pieces of wood to each other, the deck and the boards, sampled at 20 points across the first 1,000 sq ft and 4 more for every 100 after that NWFA-Installation-Guidelines-2025. A slab that clears the first says nothing about the second.

The build-up is its own budget line

Neither headline rate pays for a deck over concrete. Plywood alone is put at $1.50 to $3.00 per square foot before one board of oak is bought, with roughly another $1.50 where moisture protection goes in Easiklip-ConcreteInstall. Over a wood deck the order reverses: the oak floor arrives with a moisture-content checklist NWFA-Installation-Guidelines-2025, the plank, at one maker, with a rule for the crawl space beneath Shaw-GA-FloortePro35. On a damp slab, read vinyl plank vs engineered hardwood instead.

Section 05

Which of the two is a realistic weekend job?

In a square, empty room a homeowner can genuinely lay click-lock plank. Nail-down oak is not that job, and the reason is the reading rather than the tool.

The plank tool list is a knife, a tapping block, a pull bar and a mallet: nothing rented, nothing mixed. Oak is blind-nailed through the tongue. The cleats run at least 2 in over a 3/4 in wood subfloor Mullican-NailDown; a board under 3 in wide takes one every 8 to 10 in, a wider one every 6 to 8 in NWFA-Installation-Guidelines-2025, and a pneumatic floor nailer drives them.

That nailer rents. The judgment does not. Oak waits out 3 to 5 days in the room before anyone starts Mullican-NailDown, the house holds 65 to 75 degrees F with the air between 35 and 55 percent for seven days before delivery HD-Shaw-Solid-Install, and the gap between the deck reading and the board reading decides whether laying starts. Even so, a 2-1/4 in oak strip gaps to about the thickness of a dime in a dry winter, and usually closes again when the humidity returns Wagner-Cupping.

Hours are not where the plank wins

The hours in our model run the other way: 0.027 to 0.0533 hours a square foot against 0.021 to 0.032, which on the 340 sq ft room is 9.18 to 18.12 hours of work against 7.14 to 10.88. Plank saves you the acclimation calendar and the specialist tool, not the afternoon.

Keep two jobs on either quote: lifting the old carpet, worth $0.70 to $1.60 per square foot on both pages, and clearing the room, worth $25 to $75. Hand over stairs, kitchens, bathrooms and anything glued, in either material.

Section 06

The noise row is deliberately one-sided. That figure belongs to a plank assembly with a named underlayment under it, and no tested equivalent for solid wood appears in our sources, so read it as evidence that plank can be quieted rather than as a score against wood. Where a building rule sets an impact limit, ask for a tested floor-and-ceiling assembly by name.

Section 07

What does each floor cost to keep?

Whether plank is one installation or two is set by its own wear layer, near twenty-five years against near ten AccessFloor-WearLayer; oak is one installation plus work that costs less per square foot than laying it did.

Dollar rows are our own installed figures our arithmetic.

The middle row is the decision. Refinishing oak costs less per square foot than the $11.60 this room paid to lay it, and hands back the same floor looking new. Plank has no cheap middle move: its published repair rate sits close to its installed rate.

Inside plank, the wear layer is the lever: it decides whether the floor lands near ten years or near twenty-five. One caveat under the box: it carries no cost of money, no inflation, and a single national wage in place of your state.

Section 08

Questions homeowners ask

5 questions, each answered with the figure it rests on and the source that figure comes from.

Is vinyl plank or hardwood cheaper to install?

Plank, at every point of the band: $4.75 to $13.25 per square foot installed against $7.50 to $14.50, averaging $8.50 against $11.00. Matching grade to grade narrows it. At mid grade on a 340 sq ft room, plank prices out at $3,474 and solid white oak at $3,945, some $471 apart our arithmetic. Your own area, grade and state go into the vinyl plank cost calculator and the solid hardwood cost calculator.

Can hardwood or vinyl plank go in a basement?

Both can, and what differs is the work that comes first. Rigid-core plank is cleared for use on, above or below grade once the slab passes its moisture readings and the concrete has no history of high moisture or hydrostatic conditions COREtec-GA-Originals. Solid hardwood is never nailed into concrete, so sleepers or a plywood build-up go down first, and that deck raises the finished surface by 3/4 to 1-1/2 in HWInfo-Concrete, Easiklip-ConcreteInstall. Price that deck before you compare floors.

How many times can hardwood be sanded compared with vinyl plank?

Vinyl plank: not at all. It is not built to be sanded: a worn plank is swapped rather than refinished TodaysHomeowner-VinylPlank. Solid hardwood: each pass removes 1/32 to 1/16 in of timber, and once the wear layer over the tongue drops under 3/32 in the floor is at its limit HFMag-SandCount. One maker's terms cover one to three sandings, set by the collection Bruce-Warranty-official.

Is vinyl plank as durable as solid hardwood?

The two are not measured on one scale, so the question has no single answer. Wood publishes Janka hardness, the force needed to push a 0.444 in steel ball halfway into the board, which predicts dents from heels and furniture WoodDB-RedOak. Plank publishes a wear layer in mils, which predicts how long the printed surface keeps its looks AccessFloor-WearLayer. Buy the wood for the dent, the plank for the traffic.

Can I install either one myself?

Click-lock plank is realistic in a square, empty room: knife, tapping block, pull bar, mallet, nothing rented. Nail-down oak is a different job. The boards sit in the room 3 to 5 days first Mullican-NailDown, the house holds 65 to 75 degrees F with the air between 35 and 55 percent for a week beforehand HD-Shaw-Solid-Install, and a pneumatic nailer drives cleats through the tongue. Keep tear-out and furniture on either job.
