Carpet vs Vinyl Plank (LVP): Installation Cost Compared (2026)
A carpet floor costs $3.25 to $14.75 per square foot installed and a vinyl plank floor $4.75 to $13.25, national averages $7.25 and $8.50 as of August 2026.
On the 340 sq ft living room both calculators open with, mid grade prices out at $2,283 in carpet and $3,474 in plank, $1,191 apart our arithmetic. Carpet buys the lower entry price and the warmer bedroom; plank buys the room that gets mopped and the slab that tests damp.

On the mid grade both calculators open with, plank costs $3.50 more per installed square foot than carpet — 52 percent, or $1,191 on the shared 340 sq ft living room. Pay it where water, a mop or a concrete slab is part of the room; keep carpet where the floor stays dry our arithmetic.
Across the whole market the gap is far smaller: $1.25 a square foot, or 17 percent, separates the two national averages of $7.25 and $8.50 our arithmetic. That figure spans every grade from builder to premium. The $3.50 is the mid-grade comparison in the table below, and mid grade is what your quote will look like.
| The same room, mid grade | Carpet | Vinyl plank |
|---|---|---|
| Installed rate on 340 sq ft | $6.71 per sq ft | $10.22 per sq ft |
| That room, all in | $2,283 | $3,474 |
| Entry band | $3.25 to $7.00 | $4.75 to $9.25 |
| Top band | $7.75 to $14.75 | $7.75 to $13.25 |
| Stairs, per step | $10 to $45 | $40 to $120 |
Both top bands open at exactly $7.75, which is the part worth remembering in a showroom. Moving from basic to premium inside carpet roughly doubles the rate; moving from premium carpet to premium plank changes the opening price not at all. The grade you settle on decides more of your bill than the material does.
The switches are where two quotes stop matching
Four job options sit outside both headline prices, and only two are the same number. Lifting old carpet and pad runs $0.70 to $1.60 per sq ft either way, and emptying one room of furniture is priced at $25 to $75 on both pages. Subfloor preparation shares a $10.00 ceiling but starts a quarter apart, $1.75 against $2.00 — worth $85 on this room at the bottom of the band and nothing at the top our arithmetic. Plank then carries a fifth switch carpet has no version of: $1.00 to $3.50 per sq ft for taking up glued vinyl, tile or wood. That work still happens under a carpet job, so ask for it as its own line.
Stairs are the divergence that changes an answer rather than a total. Over the 13-step flight both pages assume, carpet adds $130 to $585 and plank $520 to $1,560.
Where you live moves one of these two much harder
Crew time is $1.55 of carpet's average square foot and $3.84 of plank's — a fifth against nearly half — so across the 44 states each page publishes, carpet's installed average travels from $6.75 to $8.50 while plank's runs $7.25 to $11.00. Set your state in the carpet calculator or the plank calculator.
Section 03
Which of the two belongs in each room?
Decide room by room, not house by house: carpet in bedrooms, plank wherever water lands or concrete is underneath, and the stairs settled on how long you intend to keep them. The table is our call on the six decisions people actually face; the three closest are worked through underneath.
| Room | What we would put down | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Carpet | Light traffic buys a light specification, 25 to 35 oz face weight, and warmth underfoot is the point of the room |
| Living and dining room | Either, specified up | 35 to 50 oz of carpet or 12 to 20 mil of plank; pick the grade before you pick the material |
| Kitchen, bath, laundry | Plank, or sheet vinyl where it has to be seamless | Plank is sold for wet rooms; sheet vinyl comes 6 and 12 ft wide, so a bath or a small kitchen can be laid without a joint in it |
| Basement or any slab | Plank, once the concrete passes both tests | Cleared at 8 lb and 90 percent internal humidity against 5 lb and 85 for carpet |
| Hallway and stairs | Carpet on price, plank on wear | $10 to $45 a step against $40 to $120, but one carpet warranty drops from 25 years to 15 once stairs are in it |
| Rental turnover | Carpet if tenants change often, plank if they stay | Carpet is the cheapest entry on either page; one warranty excludes short-term rentals outright |

The basement answers to a test result, not a preference
Book the two slab tests before anyone picks a color. Concrete inside 8 lb and 90 percent but outside 5 lb and 85 clears plank and rules carpet outCOREtec-GA-Originals,IFTI-Moisture. A slab that reads dry puts carpet back on the table, with a synthetic fiber and quite possibly a retarder beneath itHG-Carpet. Two things complicate that: sheet vinyl, the seamless option people reach for down there, carries the strictest slab requirement of the three at 3.0 lb and under 75 percentRFCI-IP1, and a plank floor's joints pass standing water to the concrete however waterproof the core is.
Stairs: cheaper in carpet, and covered for less time
At the bottom of the two bands carpet is a quarter of the price per step, and it asks for more product in return: 50 to 70 oz and above on the tread, over a stair nose rounded to 3/4 or 1 inch so the edge cannot slice the pile and the cushion under itNFD-FaceWeight,CRI-105-FullText. That saving is paid back in the warranty. In one retailer's program the texture retention and the abrasive wear covers each run 25 years wall to wall, or 28 years over a qualifying upgraded pad, and both fall to 15 years — 18 with that pad — as soon as a staircase is part of the jobStainmaster-Warranty-Lowes. Plank stairs need a nosing piece on every step at $15 to $45 eachDG-StairNosing.
For a rental, price the tenancy rather than the job
Carpet has the lower entry price at every size, which is why it dominates turnover budgets. Three published facts push back: $25 to $70 to clean a room and $50 to $80 to re-stretch itHG-Carpet; a re-stretch that wants the room emptied and the floor pulled mechanically in all four directionsCRI-FAQ; and a warranty that excludes commercial use and short-term rentals outrightStainmaster-Warranty-Lowes. Against a published 5-to-20-year service life, a unit that turns every two years replaces carpet on the tenant's clock rather than the material'sHG-Carpet.
If neither suits the room, hardwood and engineered hardwood both sit above these two on installed price, and the flooring cost hub lists everything we model.
Section 04
Which one wears out first, and what should you ask for?
Buy on the number printed on the sample tag: ounces of face weight for carpet, mils of wear layer for plank. Published service lives run 5 to 20 years for carpet and 10 to 25 for plank — ranges too wide to separate two samples standing side by side in the same showroomHG-Carpet,AccessFloor-WearLayer.
Face weight counts the yarn in the pile and nothing else, in ouncesFC-FaceWeight, and it maps onto years: a thin 30 oz carpet is published at under seven years of service, a 40 oz one at twelve or moreHG-Carpet. Ask for density alongside it, where 3,600 is the published floor for a living areaPMC-Density, because a deep pile with little yarn in it scores low and goes flat in a traffic lane. The density arithmetic is worked through on the carpet cost page.
Wear layer is the clear film on top of a plank, measured in thousandths of an inch. Twelve mil is the usual residential threshold, rated for seven to ten years of family use; 12 to 20 mil is put at fifteen to twenty years, and 20 mil upward at twenty-five and beyondAccessFloor-WearLayer. It says more about how the floor will look than the overall thickness of the board does.
| Where the floor goes | Ask carpet for | Ask plank for |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom, guest room | 25 to 35 oz face weight | 12 mil |
| Living and dining room | 35 to 50 oz | 12 to 20 mil |
| Hall, stairs, family room | 50 to 70 oz and above | 20 mil and up |
| A room in full sun | no published threshold | 20 mil or more |
Face weightNFD-FaceWeight · wear layerAccessFloor-WearLayer · sunlight50Floor-UV.
The last row is the one people skip: ultraviolet light does not merely fade vinyl, it embrittles it until it cracks, so a south- or west-facing room wants a thicker clear layer rather than a different color50Floor-UV.
What neither number covers
On carpet the blind spot is twist, how tightly the yarn is spun: the trade association ties more twist to longer shape retention without publishing a thresholdCRI-Select, so judge it by hand across two samples in the same store. On plank it is the core, which no mil rating describes. An SPC board is 4 to 6 mm of dense, largely mineral core, about 60 percent calcium carbonate, and holds its shape as a room heats and cools; a WPC board is 5 to 8 mm of foamed core with a wood-flour filler, kinder underfoot and readier to moveBL-SPCvsWPC. The cheapest planks have no rigid core at all, and every ridge under them prints throughFloorDetective-Telegraphing.
The two warranties cover opposite failures
Carpet cover is finite in years and aimed at the failure you will actually notice. In one retailer's program texture retention and abrasive wear each run 25 years wall to wall, 28 over a qualifying upgraded pad, and ten years less once stairs are included; abrasive wear counts only past 10 percent fiber loss; the cushion has to meet HUD UM 72a, Class 1; and the owner pays for a hot-water extraction in the month before a claimStainmaster-Warranty-Lowes. A rigid-core plank line answers with four lifetime limited warranties, then defines wear as vinyl worn through to the core over at least 3 percent of the floor, excludes scratches and lost gloss outright, and tapers the remedy to material only from year fiveCOREtec-Plus-Warranty.
So get the cushion specification in writing on a carpet quote and the wear layer in mils on a plank quote. One document is short-dated and pays for the flattened lane; the other is endless on paper and writes the everyday complaint out of its definition.
Section 05
Which floor can go on your slab?
Test the concrete before you choose, and expect plank to clear the damper slab. Rigid-core plank is cleared for a slab giving off up to 8 lb of vapor per 1,000 sq ft over 24 hours, and reading up to 90 percent humidity inside the concrete; carpet's published limits are 5 lb and 85 percentCOREtec-GA-Originals,Shaw-GA-FloortePro35,IFTI-Moisture. That is the reverse of what a showroom implies when it calls one floor waterproof and stops.
| What the slab is tested for | Method | Carpet | Rigid-core plank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vapor emission, per 1,000 sq ft in 24 h | ASTM F1869 | 5 lb | 8 lb |
| In-situ relative humidity | ASTM F2170 | 85 percent | 90 percent |
| Surface alkalinity | ASTM F710 | written report before glued work | named as applicable, no value published |
| Flatness of the deck | manufacturer tolerance | forgiving over cushion | 3/16 in over 10 ft, or 1/8 in over 6 ft |

Only glued carpet work triggers the paperwork. Ahead of direct glue-down, double glue-down or free-laid carpet tile, the standard requires the owner or general contractor to submit a written report on the concrete's moisture and alkalinity to the flooring contractorCRI-105-FullText. Stretch-in broadloom over cushion is none of those three, which is worth knowing when someone tells you a bedroom needs one.
Before you pay for a test, run the cheap one
Tape a 4-mil polyethylene square, 18 by 18 or 24 by 24 inches, to the slab on all four edges and leave it 16 to 24 hoursAngi-MoistureTest. It reads only the top half inch and produces no number — it tells you whether the quantitative tests are worth booking.
The joints are the weak point, whatever the core is made of
A vinyl core holds no wood fiber that water can swell, the way laminate's pressed board does, and that is why plank rather than carpet is sold into kitchens, baths and basementsHG-LamVsVinyl. The seams between boards are the other half of the story: water that works down through them and collects under a floating floor has no way back out. One premium warranty draws the boundary at the doorway — a spill inside the room is covered, water that arrives from outside it is notCOREtec-Plus-Warranty. Where a joint is a real liability, the seamless answer is sheet vinyl, and the concrete under it has to be drier still, 3.0 lb and below 75 percentRFCI-IP1.
Below grade, both floors need something added
Carpet's answer to a basement is the fiber and the cushion. Polyester, olefin and triexta resist moisture, mildew and mold better than the alternatives; pair one with an antibacterial rubber or polyurethane foam cushion and seal or separate a damp slabHG-Carpet. On the plank side, three makers word one condition three ways — a 6-mil retarder offered as extra protection, made conditional on concrete that has not cured, or required under any on- or below-grade slabCOREtec-GA-Originals,Shaw-GA-FloortePro35,Mohawk-VaporBarrier. Follow the instructions in your own carton, and budget the retarder if they read like the third.
Section 06
Which of the two can you lay yourself?
Vinyl plank, if either. Click-lock planks need nothing from a rental counter, while the residential carpet standard makes a power stretcher compulsory and will not accept a tool that pierces the backing insteadCRI-105-FullText.

What renting the tool actually buys you
A stretcher goes out at $53.85 for the day and $123.70 for the weekRentall-Stretcher. What you claw back is the professional labor line, $0.50 to $1.50 per sq ft, or $170 to $510 on this roomHG-Carpet, our arithmetic. The tool arrives with a technique attached: pulls angled about 15 degrees off the wall, and a stretch of at least 1 percent both ways on tufted synthetic-backed goodsCRI-105-FullText. Work without it and you get ripples that keep coming back, edges that lift off the floor and a backing peeling away from the carpet above it — and the manufacturer's cover is gone with itCRI-105-FullText,HG-Carpet.
Plank's equivalent risk is a clause rather than a tool: one lifetime warranty holds only for installation to the maker's instructions in a climate-controlled interior, and a floating floor later taken above 140 or below 32 degrees F has to be glued down to keep coverCOREtec-Plus-Warranty. That is the line that catches sunrooms.
Our own hours run against the reputation
Comparison pages routinely call carpet the more labor-intensive of the two; our values say otherwise. Carpet is carried at 0.011 to 0.029 hours per square foot and plank at 0.027 to 0.0533, which on 340 sq ft is 3.74 to 9.86 hours against 9.18 to 18.12. Fewer hours is not easier — carpet is the shorter job that has to be right the first time.

Carpet's upkeep is a schedule, plank's is an accident

Plank books nothing. Care is a pH-neutral cleaner, and the maker's own guide rules out vinegar, wax, citrus cleaners, floor polish and any steam mop it has not approvedCoretecFloors-CleaningGuide. What arrives instead is a repair the day something gouges the surface: $9.50 to $12.00 per square foot with labor, or $2.50 to $5.00 for the boards plus a $25 to $30 one-time kit if you swap them yourselfHomeAdvisor-VinylRepair. What the box leaves out
The cost of money, price inflation, and the value of not having a crew in the house for a week. It also assumes you replace like with like, which most people do not, and it uses one grade at one national wage. Read it as a shape, not a forecast.
Section 08
Will either floor move the sale price?
Spend the money on the specification that keeps the surface looking new, and treat a resale claim in either direction as a sales line — the industry's own remodeling study prices no carpet project and no vinyl plank project at all, only new wood flooringNAR-2025-RIR. What a buyer reacts to is condition rather than category: a matted traffic lane and a gouged plank both read as a floor to replace.
Section 09
Questions homeowners ask
9 questions, each answered with the figure it rests on and the source that figure comes from.
Which is warmer and quieter underfoot, carpet or vinyl plank?
Carpet over cushion, on warmth and softness — the honest reason it stays in bedrooms. On impact noise the two land closer than a showroom suggests: carpet over a bonded polyurethane cushion has been rated IIC 69 on a concrete deck against IIC 19 for the bare slab, measured double glued down rather than stretched in over a pad, so close to your job rather than identicalBuildings-CarpetCushion. One underlayment maker publishes IIC 70 and STC 62 under vinyl plankMPGlobal-QuietWalkLV; both clear the IIC 50 named as a laboratory minimumLigea-CarpetAcoustics. Specify the plank underlayment deliberately and noise stops deciding this.
Can vinyl plank go over old carpet, or over the tile that is down now?
Not over carpet — one manufacturer rules it out as a substrateCOREtec-GA-Originals, so the carpet and pad come out first at the $0.70 to $1.60 per sq ft removal both calculators carry. Tile is the opposite case: rigid core may stay on a sound hard floor with grout joints up to 1/4 inch, once loose tiles are refixed and wide joints filled levelCOREtec-GA-Originals,FC-OverTile. Under carpet that tile still comes up, at $1.00 to $3.00 per sq ftHG-Carpet.
When can you use the room again after each floor goes in?
Carpet asks for the longer wait: air the room out 48 to 72 hours afterwardCRI-FAQ, and give the pile roughly a month to settleShaw-Plan. Beforehand the material sits in the room 24 hours, with the space held at 65 to 95 degrees FCRI-105-FullText. Rigid-core plank skips acclimation and only asks for 55 to 85 degrees F on the dayCOREtec-GA-Originals; glued down, it can be walked on after 24 hours, with rolling loads held back until 48EverStep-GlueDown.
What do Home Depot and Lowe's charge for each?
Third-party figures rather than our rates. Home Depot's carpet service is reported at $1.60 to $5.00 a square foot with tear-out inside the price, and Lowe's at $4.00 to $6.00 covering carpet, pad, removal and the workHG-Carpet. On plank, a second publisher reports labor alone: $1.50 to $5.00 at Home Depot, $2 to $7 at Lowe's, where independent contractors do the installingRemodelCalc-LowesVinyl. Match the scope before holding either against $6.71 or $10.22 here.
How much does a 12 by 12 room cost in each?
Twelve by twelve is 144 square feet, so type that into either calculator for the closer figure. The smallest published rows on the two pages start at 200 sq ft, averaging $1,475 for carpet against $1,725 for plank. Two things bite in a small room: a $300 minimum job charge lifts either total if the work calculates below it, and broadloom comes off a 12 ft roll, so a 12 by 12 bedroom takes one width and needs no seam at allDG-Roll.
How much does 1,000 square feet cost in each?
Budget $3,200 to $14,400 for carpet, averaging $7,200, and $4,600 to $12,800 for plank, averaging $8,200 — $1,000 apart on the averages our arithmetic. Per square foot both come down a little on a bigger floor, and plank comes down further, because so much of its bill is crew time — the part that shrinks when a crew sets up once for 1,000 sq ft instead of 200. Neither number includes taking the old floor out.
Which is better for allergies?
Nothing we hold measures the two against each other, so treat an allergy pitch as a sales line. Two things you can act on are documented: ask for a FloorScore-certified plank, tested for indoor-air emissions against a California chamber methodRFCI-FloorScore, and if you keep carpet, budget a professional clean every 12 to 18 monthsCRI-FAQ.
Which holds up better with a dog or a cat?
Claws and accidents fail differently, so split the question. A claw works on the plank's clear layer, so shop mils rather than board thicknessAccessFloor-WearLayer — and note that the premium plank warranty set out in the durability section does not count scratches as wear at all. Carpet does not scratch; it mats along the line the animal walks daily. On accidents the carpet document is the more generous of the two, covering pet stains wall to wall but not on the stairsStainmaster-Warranty-Lowes.
Can either floor go over radiant heat?
Both can, on different conditions. Vinyl is thermoplastic, so the heated subfloor under it may not run hotter than 85 degrees F at its surface — that is the number to hand your heating contractorCOREtec-GA-Originals,Shaw-GA-FloortePro35,RFCI-IP1. Carpet has no published surface ceiling in our sources, but its standard changes the fixing: over radiant heat the tack strip is set with adhesive, never nails or screwsCRI-105-FullText. Say so when you ask for the quote.
