Carpet vs Hardwood: Installation Cost Compared (2026)
Carpet costs $3.25 to $14.75 per square foot installed and solid hardwood $7.50 to $14.50, with national averages of $7.25 and $11.00 as of August 2026.
Put the same 340 sq ft living room through both calculators at mid grade and the bill reads $2,283 in carpet against $3,945 in oak, a difference of $1,662 our arithmetic. The ceilings nearly meet, though: the priciest carpet sits 25 cents above the priciest oak, which makes grade the bigger lever inside either band. Everything after the invoice is where the two really separate.

How this number was captured
Carpet: retailer list prices read August 24, 2026 · BLS OEWS May 2025. Hardwood: retailer list prices read August 24, 2026 · BLS OEWS May 2025. Full source list for both materials in section 10.
On the national averages, oak asks $3.75 more for every installed square foot than carpet does, $11.00 to carpet's $7.25. Priced as one job instead, the default 340 sq ft room at mid grade separates them by $1,662, $3,945 against $2,283 our arithmetic. Pay it for a floor you can resurface rather than replace, and keep carpet for bedrooms, rentals and staircases.
| The same 340 sq ft room, mid grade | Carpet | Solid oak |
|---|---|---|
| Installed rate | $6.71 per sq ft | $11.60 per sq ft |
| The room, all in | $2,283 | $3,945 |
| Material | $1,301 | $3,072 |
| Crew | $536 | $773 |
| Pad and tack strip, or paper and cleats | $446 | $100 |
Those rates are one grade on one room; the headline averages aggregate all three grades, which is why the two pairs diverge. Read the bands instead of the averages and the two close up. Carpet spans $11.50 from bottom to top, hardwood $7.00, and carpet's ceiling of $14.75 sits above hardwood's $14.50 our arithmetic. At 500 sq ft the two ceilings tie at $7,300; the 2,000 sq ft row then repeats the pattern, carpet at $28,500 against $28,200. What hardwood has no version of is cheap. Its entry rate of $7.50 is more than double carpet's $3.25.
Where the money sits inside each rate
Crew time takes close to a fifth out of either rate, $1.55 inside carpet's average square foot and $2.25 inside hardwood's. Carpet's mandatory extras line, pad and tack strip and trim, is $1.29 per square foot against $0.29 for hardwood's paper and cleats, a dollar apart our arithmetic. Material is three fifths of carpet's square foot and more than three quarters of hardwood's.
The switches that sit outside both prices
Hardwood carries six job switches to carpet's four, and two of them are worth settling before you sign. Sanding and finishing the boards in place is a $3.00 to $8.00 per sq ft switch on the hardwood side alone, worth $1,020 to $2,720 on this room and more than the $773 of crew time in the base job our arithmetic. The hardwood page prices two kinds of tear out, old wood at $1.38 to $3.88 and old carpet at $0.70 to $1.60, since most oak floors replace carpet. The carpet page carries no such line, so price that demolition on its own.
Carpet installers and floor layers are separate occupations in the federal wage release, so the state tables on the two pages cover 44 areas each and not an identical 44. Your state sits in the calculator on the carpet cost page, the oak one on the hardwood cost page.
Section 03
Which number tells you how each one wears?
Hardness is measured on the boards and never on the pile, so no single test ranks these two. Buy each on its own scale: lbf for oak, ounces for carpet.
Janka hardness is the force in pounds needed to press a steel ball halfway into a board at 12 percent moisture content WoodDB-RedOak. Across the six species the hardwood cost page lists, it runs from 1,010 lbf for black walnut, the softest of them, up to 1,880 for shagbark hickory WoodDB-BlackWalnut, WoodDB-ShagbarkHickory. Grade names are no guide to any of that: Clear, Select, #1 Common and #2 Common sort the same timber by how much knot and color variation it shows, not by strength H4L-NOFMA. Pay up a grade for the look, not for a longer life.
Carpet is specified by mass
Nothing on a carpet tag answers the hardness question. Two mass figures stand in for it: face weight, counted in ounces of pile yarn per square yard FC-FaceWeight, and density, which is that weight multiplied by 36 and divided by the pile height in inches, where 3,600 ounces per cubic yard is the published minimum for a living area PMC-Density. The warranty follows the same logic: one retailer program counts abrasive wear only once more than 10 percent of the fiber has left a walked area Stainmaster-Warranty-Lowes. Which ounce band suits which room is set out in carpet vs vinyl plank.
Section 04
Slabs, basements and heat under the floor
Carpet is the simpler floor on concrete and the only one of the two with a documented method over radiant heat. Solid hardwood as a rule needs a structure built above a slab first, and most makers write radiant heat out of the warranty.
Nobody nails into concrete, so wood on a slab usually means sleepers and a plywood deck HWInfo-Concrete; a cost guide reports glue-down as an option for certain solid products HG-HW-Cost. A manufacturer guide prices that deck at $1.50 to $3.00 per sq ft in plywood alone, with about $1.50 more when a moisture barrier is added, and warns that the whole assembly raises the floor by 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches Easiklip-ConcreteInstall. That height then meets your doors, your thresholds and the bottom stair. The build up is costed out in hardwood vs engineered hardwood.
For carpet the same basement is a purchase decision: choose a synthetic pile, because polyester, olefin and triexta stand up to damp, mildew and mold better than the other fibers do, and expect a wet slab to be sealed or separated first HG-Carpet. The test thresholds sit on the carpet cost page.
Radiant heat is settled by the warranty sheet
Carpet can be laid over a heated floor: the standard keeps the method and changes the fixing, so the tack strip is bonded down instead of being fastened through the deck CRI-105-FullText.
Solid wood runs the other way: one maker excludes radiant installations from its warranty Somerset-Warranty, one 3/4 inch installation guide rules the assembly out HD-Shaw-Solid-Install, and a third answers collection by collection Bruce-Warranty-official. Where wood is used over heat at all, the guidelines hold the finished surface to 80 degrees F NWFA-Installation-Guidelines-2025. So ask for the warranty sheet of the exact collection, not for a view on the category.
Section 05
Can you lay either one yourself?
The two rentals cost about the same for a day. Only one of them is compulsory. A power carpet stretcher is $53.85 a day at one US rental counter Rentall-Stretcher and a pneumatic floor nailer $51.90 at another RobinRents-Nailer. Under that standard the power stretcher is not optional, and a tool that pierces the backing is no substitute CRI-105-FullText. No rule governs the nailer: it is simply what a nail down floor takes.
What you would save is the crew line: $536 on the carpet room, $773 on the hardwood one. Two things separate those figures, not one: our model carries about two hours more work in wood across this room, and the two trades sit on separate wage series in the same federal release our arithmetic.
Carpet laid without a proper stretch ripples and buckles, and a faulty installation wears it faster while voiding the warranty CRI-105-FullText, HG-Carpet. Wood punishes measurement: boards run across the joists, not along them Vision-JoistDirection, and they have to come within 4 percent of the subfloor's moisture content, 2 percent for plank 3 inches and wider NWFA-Installation-Guidelines-2025. Miss that and it surfaces a season later as cupped boards or winter gaps Wagner-Cupping.
Section 06
Which floor belongs in which room?
Take this decision room by room, not floor by floor. Carpet belongs in bedrooms, on stairs and below grade; hardwood earns its price in the rooms you live in and mean to keep.
| Room | The pick here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Carpet | Light traffic, warmth underfoot, lowest entry price on either page |
| Living or dining room | Either, once the grade is settled | Grade is the bigger lever inside either band |
| Basement or any slab | Carpet, in a synthetic fiber | Wood usually needs a deck built over the concrete first |
| Stairs | Carpet on price | $10 to $45 a step against $100 to $250 |
| Room heated from below | Carpet | Wood is cleared collection by collection, if at all |
| Rental you turn over often | Carpet | Its cheapest band opens below half the cheapest hardwood |
| The house you plan to keep | Hardwood | It is resurfaced rather than replaced |

Stairs are the widest gap on this page
Treads are hand work, priced one step at a time rather than by area. Across the 13 steps both calculators assume, the carpet line is $130 to $585 and the oak line $1,300 to $3,250 our arithmetic, a tenfold gap at the bottom of the bands. Nosings on wood treads are quoted separately. If the staircase is what makes the hardwood quote hurt, carpet the stairs and lay wood in the rooms.
Section 07
Replacing a floor against resurfacing one
Carpet has no repair path at the end: it comes out and a new one goes in. A solid oak floor is sanded back and refinished in place, at a published residential interval of every seven to ten years HG-HW-Cost.
Published carpet service life runs 5 to 20 years depending on quality, fiber, traffic and care HG-Carpet. When it ends there is no half measure: the renewal price is the installed price again, $3.25 to $14.75 per square foot. One cost guide publishes refinishing at $2 to $8 per square foot HG-HW-Cost, and our own sanding switch prices it at $3.00 to $8.00, or $1,020 to $2,720 on this room. Against the $3,945 that room costs to lay in oak, refinishing is the cheaper move across the whole band, though at the top of it the sanding alone passes a complete mid grade carpet job in the same room, $2,283 our arithmetic.
The limit is physical rather than financial. A traditional sanding takes 1/32 to 1/16 inch off the surface, and sanding is not recommended once less than 3/32 inch of wood remains above the tongue HFMag-SandCount. The question to ask about a used wood floor is how often it has been sanded.
Carpet books its upkeep differently: one retailer program honors a wear claim only if a professional hot water extraction was paid for in the 30 days before filing, against a recommended interval of every 12 to 18 months Stainmaster-Warranty-Lowes. Budget that as part of the floor.
Section 08
What the one national survey actually says
One wood flooring category appears in the national remodeling survey people quote from, and carpet does not appear in it at all. In the National Association of Realtors 2025 Remodeling Impact Report, New Wood Flooring is the single flooring category, and the report gives it a Joy Score of 8.8 out of 10; the word carpet does not occur in the document NAR-2025-RIR.
It says owners who put in a new wood floor report high satisfaction with the result. It does not say what either floor returns at sale: the report publishes no cost recovery percentage for wood flooring at all NAR-2025-RIR. The report simply never priced carpet, which is a different finding from carpet costing you value at sale.
Section 09
Questions homeowners ask
5 questions, each answered with the figure it rests on and the source that figure comes from.
Is carpet or hardwood cheaper to install?
Carpet is cheaper almost everywhere in the range: $3.25 against $7.50 at the entry, $7.25 against $11.00 on the national averages, and $2,283 against $3,945 for a mid grade 340 sq ft room. The bands cross only at the ceiling, where carpet reaches $14.75 and oak stops at $14.50.
Can carpet or hardwood go in a basement?
Carpet can, on two conditions: a synthetic pile, and a slab that has been sealed or separated from the floor where it reads damp HG-Carpet. Solid hardwood cannot be nailed to concrete HWInfo-Concrete, so the usual route is a sleeper frame or plywood deck first: the plywood alone adds $1.50 to $3.00 per sq ft, and the build-up raises the floor by 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches Easiklip-ConcreteInstall.
Can either floor go over radiant heat?
Carpet can: the standard keeps the method and changes the fixing, bonding the tack strip down instead of driving fasteners through a heated deck CRI-105-FullText. Solid wood is mostly excluded. One maker voids the warranty for radiant installations Somerset-Warranty, one 3/4 inch installation guide rules it out HD-Shaw-Solid-Install, and a third answers collection by collection Bruce-Warranty-official.
How much does each cost for a 1,000 sq ft house?
Measured over 1,000 sq ft of floor, carpet comes to $3,200 to $14,400 with an average of $7,200; oak to $7,350 to $14,200, averaging $10,900. So the averages sit $3,700 apart while the two top figures are $200 from each other our arithmetic: hardwood has no cheap version, and expensive carpet costs what expensive wood costs. Neither figure covers tear out.
Does hardwood add more resale value than carpet?
No national survey says so in numbers. In the National Association of Realtors 2025 Remodeling Impact Report, New Wood Flooring is the only flooring category and scores 8.8 out of 10 for joy; carpet is absent, and no cost recovery percentage is published for wood flooring either NAR-2025-RIR. Absence from a survey is not evidence of lower value.
