The mil column follows the room, not the core: nothing published ties a wear layer to a core typeAccessFloor-WearLayer. Roll goods are the exception — there the published figure hangs on how long the floor lasts, and no room or traffic recommendation goes with it.

Which number predicts how the floor looks in ten years?

One mil is a thousandth of an inch, and the clear layer on top is what survives a hallway. Six to 8 mil shows scratches at five to ten years, 12 mil is the residential threshold, 12 to 20 mil is put at 15 to 20 years, and 20 mil and up at 25 years or moreAccessFloor-WearLayer. What separates two planks at the same price?

Three details on the sample. Bevel edges fake a visible joint between boards. Embossed-in-register texture lines the pressed grain up with the printed grain, so a knot you can see is a hollow you can feelOnFlooring-EIR. An attached pad replaces the separate underlayment; where the plank comes bare, the maker caps anything you put under it at 3 mmCOREtec-GA-Originals. Why does premium cost barely more than mid?

The shelf runs out. In a metropolitan reference market basic ran $0.99 to $1.69 per sq ft and mid $3.59 to $4.39, and the dearest plank actually stocked in store was a 30 mil, 12 mm, cork-backed board at $4.49. The next real product above it was $6.39 onlineQ1-VINYL-PREMIUM. Between those two figures there was nothing to buy — a gap in the market rather than in the survey, and the reason the premium band stops where it does.

Read the tags, not the sample prices: the premium reference plank lists at $3.69 and the mid one at $3.79. The two overlap almost completely on wear layer, so in an ordinary bedroom the step up buys a carton count to plan around, not a longer floor.

Apply the allowance to the whole job rather than room by room — offcuts from one room start the next. Then treat the carton as the real unit. Coverage runs 18 to 32 sq ft, 20 to 25 most common, and nothing is standardized because weight rather than area sets it: makers aim at a 35 to 50 lb box one person can carryFC-BoxContent-Vinyl. Take the coverage off the label of the product you are buying — on the mid-grade plank, a 1,000 sq ft floor at 10 percent waste is 54 cartons our arithmetic.

In the price

• The planks, at the grade you pick.
• The work: layout, first course, cuts at jambs and cabinets, staggered end joints, the finish at doorways.

Outside the price sit five switches you turn on in the calculator: lifting old carpet, lifting old vinyl or tile, moving furniture at $25 to $75 a room, stairs charged by the step, and subfloor preparation. Each is added at its published band with no uplift, and the two tear-out lines are not the same job — a glued floor costs roughly twice what carpet does to remove.

Neither switch says where the old floor ends up. Ask whether haul-away sits in the tear-out line, and have the answer written beside the rate before you sign anything.

The two numbers that keep a floating floor flat

Leave 1/4 in at every wall and fixed obstruction, and 1/2 in once the floor passes 2,500 sq ftCOREtec-GA-Originals,Shaw-GA-FloortePro35. Break the run before it passes 30 to 40 linear ft, which some makers stretch to 50: past that, accumulated expansion has nowhere to go and the floor tentsMSI-Transition. A transition in a doorway divides one floating field into two.

End joints are the third number, and the makers measure it differently — one asks for at least 20 cm, about 7.9 in, between joints in adjacent rows and 30 cm for tile formats; the other for a one-third offset with a 6 in minimumCOREtec-GA-Originals,Shaw-GA-FloortePro35. 1. Empty the room and take the baseboards off. Cabinets go in first and the floor runs around them; their weight pins a floor that has to moveRCF-CabinetsFirst. Under a fixed island the maker requires the plank bonded, and 2 ft beyond the unitCOREtec-GA-Originals.
2. Decide what stays. Rigid core goes over most sound hard surfaces: tile with joints up to 1/4 in, single-layer bonded vinyl; carpet and wood over concrete are outCOREtec-GA-Originals. Whatever stays gets fixed first: loose tiles reset, wide joints filled level, squeaking boards screwed downFC-OverTile.
3. Put a straightedge on the deck instead of trusting your eye. It may wander 3/16 in over 10 ft, or 1/8 in over 6 ftCOREtec-GA-Originals,Shaw-GA-FloortePro35. Grind the high spots and fill the low ones; a 50 lb bag of self-leveler covers 40 to 48 sq ft at 1/8 inConstructCalc-SelfLeveler.
4. Test concrete by name and by number. ASTM F1869 with a calcium chloride kit and ASTM F2170 for in-situ humidity produce a figure; the taped-down 4 mil poly screen, ASTM D4263, takes 16 to 24 hours and produces noneAngi-MoistureTest. 5. Bring the room to 55 to 85 degrees F and hold it there. Rigid core needs no acclimation; a glued job needs 48 hours for planks and adhesiveCOREtec-GA-Originals,EverStep-GlueDown.
6. Set the layout and lay the field, with the gap at every wall, joints staggered to the maker's rule, and a transition before the run reaches its limit.
7. Fit transitions, thresholds and trim so they cover the expansion gap without pinching it — a profile screwed through the plank into the subfloor defeats the floating principle.
8. Stay off it: foot traffic after 24 hours, furniture and rolling loads after 48EverStep-GlueDown.

Four ways this goes wrong

• No expansion gap, or trim resting on the plank.
• One field run past its length limit. An open plan of 45 ft without a transition tents, and no warranty covers itMSI-Transition.
• Gluing to a slab nobody tested. Bubbling and bond failure follow.
• Trusting the old floor. Ridges, proud fastener heads and dried adhesive print through a thin plankFloorDetective-Telegraphing.

Published labor for floor work in general — not a plank-specific rate — runs $1.50 to $4.00 a square footFlooringCostPro-DIYvsPro, so on this room you would be buying back $510 to $1,360 of work our arithmetic. Budget the first day generously: the open field goes fast, and jambs, pipe collars and toe-kicks do not.

Six questions separate two prices:

Have the material line and the labor line written separately. For anyone paying by the hour, general contractor rates in this trade are published at $50 to $150HG-LVP.

• The room is narrower than the roll. Roll goods come 6 ft and 12 ft wideDG-VinylRoll, so a bath, laundry or galley kitchen goes in with no joint in the field. Nothing sold as plank does that at any price.
• The floor is small and the budget is tight. At 200 sq ft one published comparison puts sheet at $800 to $1,200 against $800 to $2,400 for plankFixr-VinylSheet. They start together; only the ceiling moves.
• The floor has a short horizon. Roll goods are published at 10 to 20 years, tightened to 10 to 15 in some readingsWebSearch-SheetLifespan — the honest fit for a rental turnover or a kitchen already on a list to be redone.

Where it loses is handling and repair. A full-width piece is heavy and unforgiving of one bad cut, which makes it the harder of the two to lay yourself. Damage is patched from leftover material rather than swapped board for board, so keep the offcutThisOldHouse-PatchSheetVinyl.

What does a roll list at?

Roll goods are sold by the linear foot at full width, so a shelf price rarely reads in dollars per square foot.

Read the last column before the price column. Both Lowe's rolls sit under the 12 mil that counts as a good wear layer on a plankAccessFloor-WearLayer; on mid-range roll goods with a fiberglass core, a 15 to 20 mil wear layer can last 15 to 20 yearsDG-Roll-Sheet. Both Menards prices are after-rebate values.

Order by direction, too: a 14 by 20 ft floor run lengthwise takes 480 sq ft off a 12 ft roll against 336 sq ft turned ninety degrees, one seam either way our arithmetic.

Two of those need a page of their own. Against carpet, stairs, slab moisture and who lays it settle the choice: carpet vs vinyl plank. Against engineered hardwood, the room total lands within a hundred dollars and refinishing decides it: vinyl plank vs engineered hardwood.

Against laminate the room decides, not the price: laminate is the more scratch-resistant surface and lasts 15 to 30 years in dry rooms against 10 to 20 for LVP, yet in the middle of the market the two install for much the same, $5 to $8 per sq ftHG-LamVsVinyl.
